Boracay 2002

May 2004

Boracay Island, with its sugary white sand beaches and azure blue waters, is located on the northwestern tip of Panay, Western Visayas. The best of the island is the 4 km. White Beach, touted as the “finest beach in the world.” The water surrounding the island is shallow and the sand is finer and brighter than most beaches in the archipelago.

Boracay is tropical island located approximately 315km (200 miles) south of Manila and 2km off the northwest tip of the island of Panay in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines. It is one of the country's most popular tourist destinations.

From Manila's domestic airport or from Cebu airport, take flights to Boracay either via Kalibo (45 minutes away) or via Caticlan (30-40 minutes away) which is the nearest airport. We took the latter.

At either airports vehicles-for-hire will take you to the Caticlan Jetty Port, where boats are stationed to take you to the island. We took a 3 minute tricycle ride to the port.

From Caticlan jetty port, boat ride will take 15-20 minutes to get to Boracay. All tourists arrive on the island on small boats which come up to the beach and you wade ashore. Your luggage is hoisted onto the sand for you by porters down tiny gangplanks.

The boat dropped us off at Lorenzo Grand Villa which boasts of 16 superior and two premier rooms, all with air conditioning.

Each room opens to a spectacular view of crystalline waters and golden tropical sunsets, and is equipped with a mini bar, cable TV, direct-dial telephone and bath tub.
We were then wisked off to our resort : Lorenzo Main which was a few steps from the best part of the island, a four-kilometer White Beach hailed as the finest beach in the world. The surrounding water is shallow and the sand is finer and brighter than most beaches in the archipelago. White Beach is so, soooo fine, it feels like treading on miles of baby powder!

That evening, we enjoy the nightlife of Boracay. The fun in the island doesn't end when the sun sets. Nightlife is vibrant with many bars and restaurants serving food, drink and fun until the very late evening.

The resort's 24-air-conditioned suites, with the famed anahaw-lined ceiling, are an elegant blend of local architecture and western convenience. We wake up to look forward to the day's adventures.

Along White Beach, there is a wide variety of gift shops and boutiques along the beach path and in D*Mall. In addition to the crowded stalls that you expect in Asia, Boracay also has several high-end stores including clothing, art and household items.

While walking or laying on the sand, anywhere on Boracay, you'll be approached to buy a variety of items including locally-made jewlery made of shells from Puka Beach, fresh fruit, ice cream, sunglasses or a massage.

White Beach is what most people are here for. Once you are there, anyone will be tempted to wear their Speedos and enjoy the lovely stretch of powdery white sand against azure water.

Marvin, too agrees that the Philippines can very well be Asia's Beach Capital, what with 7,107 islands, and a coastline twice the length of that of the USA. The beach has been hailed as the finest beach in the world.

After enjoying the tropical sun, we begin to explore around the island's coast, we rent a motorized banca. A common sight round the island is the sailing Paraw, a narrow hulled boat with outriggers either side and with passengers sometimes seated on a trampoline platform between the outrigger supports.

Travelling around the island gives a wonderful view of its shores and of islets surrounding Boracay. We also admired the marine life and coral reefs during snorkeling.

Puka Beach is situated along the island's northern end. This 800-meter beach is made up of puka shells bleached white in the sun.

Relatively uncrowded, the location gives you a feeling of remoteness, enhanced by towering craggy cliffs clad in coconut trees

After enjoying Puka Beach, we are brought back to White Beach to enjoy the island's magnificient sunset.
Thank you for joining us.
